Vladimir Asriev, the originator and director of Russian Art Gallery has been an art collector and art consultant since 1974. In 1976, to the great annoyance of the Odessa Ukraine KGB he issued Catalogue of the Collection of Vladimir Asriev. This included about 100 artworks, representative of almost every nonconformist Odessa artist. During this period, he was also behind many private exhibitions of nonconformist artists showing their work at his unofficial gallery his flat at the centre of the city. This became an open house for local artists, musicians and poets. Since moving to England in 1980, Asriev has been behind many exhibitions of Russian art. In 1989 he set up his own London gallery the Red Square Gallery, W1, where he staged many successful shows of major Russian and Soviet artists closed 1992. He is one of the leading art consultants in the field of Soviet and postSoviet art as well as Soviet NonConformist art in England today.
