Maureen Maki in Visual Art & Designs Directory
Maureen Makis paintings have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States. Her work has been commissioned by public and corporate institutions, including the University of Southern California in Irvine, and the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department. Her paintings reflect an ongoing obsession with layers and what lies beneath. Multiple layers of paper, texture, and paint overlap and interact building a complex terrain. Experimentation with paper, color, and process reveals her printmaking background, while creating a dynamic collaged surface. The constantly evolving images are metaphors for the unconscious mind as it processes an infinite stream of information, ideas, and feelings. Maureen Maki was born in Flint, Michigan just as the auto factories of the Midwest were starting to close their doors. She attended art school at the University of Michigan where she studied painting and printmaking. She lived in downtown Detroit for ten years and was heavily involved in the art and music scene in the city. She started the seminal 2South Art Gallery and operated it for four years. Leaving her blue collar roots behind, Maureen moved to Los Angeles in 2000 where she immediately began showing her work in galleries. Shortly after her arrival in California, she was awarded a grant from the City of Los Angeles to complete four panels to be displayed permanently on a public bus shelter. In April of 2005 she was chosen as the Liquitex Artist of the Month by paint company Liquitex Acrylics. In January 2006 she was selected to show her work in the LA Art Show. She is currently a member of the Pharmaka group of painters that has built and now operates Pharmaka, a NonProfit Exhibition Space, in downtown Los Angeles. The space is dedicated to mounting shows that address a dialogue in contemporary painting.
