Sally Banfill in Visual Art & Designs Directory

Sally Banfills acrylic paintings depict strange, uniquely American landscapes. Stark and surreal scenes have been archaeologically stripped of clutter to reveal some odd artifact such as a coin operated elephant or the bygone gas station shaped like a cowboy hat and boots. These lonely tableaus have an air of mystery and a touch of the ominous. Banfill is from Olalla, Washington. She studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and received a BFA from the University of Hawaii in 1984. Much of her inspiration comes from the 20th century American Regionalist painters; from the lonely isolated scenes of Edward Hopper to the whimsical and twisted world of Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood.
