Hal Newhouser in Visual Art & Designs Directory

It is very important for me to express my passion and imagination in life. The art work you see on these web pages represents 42 years of soul searching. I convey my talent through my feeling of an image. The images I paint come from nature including the beautiful states of Washington, Colorado, New York, California and Florida. Education is the most important part of the process. I have studied with Miss Bergman a commercial artist, Marion Kendal an oil painter, Corine Smith who works with pastel portraits and life drawings, Charlie Carpenter and Jolene Ford both oil painters. These teachers all helped me to trust and listen to my inner voice, and helped me to stop painting over perfectly good ideas by covering them up. I now accept the first finished image that I complete. The process of capturing nature at its best sometimes involves heart stopping moments. While backpacking on the Rocky Mountain Plato, just outside Fairplay, Colorado, my friend Tom Doctor and I had set camp just before sundown. After a long day and getting settled in I soon fell asleep. It wasnt until I woke later that Tom told me a rattlesnake had also settled in for the evening...on my chest The snake was so close that his tongue kept flicking close to my mouth. Some moments are best not to witness. The other close call happened in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. Walking through a forest of pine trees I came upon an opening where I found a place to rest near a set of deer antlers. Hearing a noise I looked up to see a herd of maybe 200 deer approaching from the lower valley. A large buck with huge brown eyes approached me and became very upset with my presence in his territory. After eyeing me for a moment he angrily stomped the ground near the antlers and gave me a kick in my side that I will never forget. My heart was racing as I held my breath, and as I laid as still as I could it seemed like minutes, before he turned and headed for the herd. My medium includes pastel portraits, oils, watercolors and pencil drawings.
