Passing the time.....I ponder about this, about the passing of time, how it gathers and pulls on the threads of memory, leaving patterns on the surface of things: our skin, the skin of the earth, the topography of life. I’m conscious of coming to terms with mortality and the process of aging, which I find magical and beautiful…the configurations of decay in peeling paint, patterns of moss, algae and rust on aging buildings, stories written on an ancient face, skin as the geographical relief of getting older. I work with encaustic wax because it can be layered, reworked, and modeled. Rich surface textures can be attained and it has excellent adhesive qualities that I use to adhere woven cloth ontointo. Contemporary artists, Theodore Stamos, Antoni Tapies and Robert Natkin, I draw inspiration from. Abstract, textural, and landscapederived paintings are additional sources of inspiration. Applying dyes, paints and surface coatings onto soft textiles evokes my fascination with the natural forces that work upon the earth. I attempt to capture the beauty of ageing while exploring the circular creation and shedding of my own artistic skins.
